IIT Madras professor awarded with prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize

Professor Rajnish Kumar of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has been honoured with the esteemed Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, an award dedicated to those advancing human knowledge through exceptional contributions in their field of expertise.

The award celebrates Professor Kumar’s extraordinary contributions to the understanding of clathrate hydrate nucleation and growth, CO2 sequestration in solid hydrates, and methane recovery from marine gas hydrates, highlighting the importance of his research in addressing environmental challenges.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has presented this award to notable contributors in various scientific and technical fields since 1985.


Professor V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, expressed immense pride in Professor Kumar’s achievements, stating, “Dr. Rajnish Kumar’s recognition with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for 2022 is a testament to his exceptional contributions to research”.

Professor Kamakoti lauded his dedication to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and reiterated IIT Madras’ faith in the power and impact of research.


A well-respected scholar in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Professor Rajnish Kumar has a decorated academic record with over a decade of experience in research and teaching.

His impressive citation record, numerous research articles and recognition as a ‘Highly Cited Researcher’ in Engineering display a longstanding commitment to furthering knowledge and innovation.

Professor Kumar expressed his gratitude by saying, “I am extremely honoured to receive the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize-2022 in Engineering Sciences,” attributing his honour to devoted students, collaborators and funding agencies.


Professor Kumar’s research focus on unconventional energy resources and sustainable solutions, spanning from CO2 capture to water purification, exemplify his pursuit of innovative methods for tackling global environmental challenges.
