Coding and AI to be introduced in UP schools from 2024

In a pivotal shift towards technology-oriented education, the Uttar Pradesh education department has announced plans to teach the basics of coding, computational thinking and artificial intelligence (AI) to students in state-run schools starting from the academic session of 2024-25.

TECHNOLOGY AN INTEGRAL PART OF MODERN EDUCATION

Consequently, over 50 lakh students from Classes 6 to 8 attending approximately 45,000 state-owned schools will participate in the programme.

Previously deemed a skill set for the tech-savvy, coding and computational capabilities have now taken centre stage as fundamental cognitive tools instrumental in the holistic development of learners.

The inclusion of coding lessons in the curriculum aligns with the mandate set by NEP-2020, demonstrating the significant role technology plays in modern education.

DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE COURSE

Developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), the course will be integrated as part of the existing science curriculum.

Class 6 students will delve into learning Microsoft Word, basic programming, Python and other fundamentals of computer science.

Meanwhile, students from Classes 7-8 will be guided through networking and cyber security, logical thinking, Microsoft Excel, data, and AI learning.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will launch an array of textbooks for all three classes, prepared by SCERT.

A STEPPING STONE FOR FUTURE LEADERS

SCERT Director Pawan Sachan commented on the development stating, “Introducing coding and increasing exposure to technology at a young age will go a long way in helping the youth lead the way to a new world of innovation and creativity, thus, giving children the opportunity to set their own goals and reach new heights.”

Vijay Kiran Anand, Director General School Education added that SCERT is working with experts to ensure the introduction of a novel content and curriculum for future training of teachers and regular assessments in financial intelligence, business intelligence, coding, and AI, to make government school students more competitive.
