Oscar award-winning composer AR Rahman performed at a concert titled ‘Marakuma Nenjam’ at Adityaram Palace in Chennai’s Paniyur on September 10. Nearly 50,000 people attended the concert. However, several fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to slam Rahman and the organisers (ACTC Events) for poor crowd management.

Here’s everything that happened explained in pointers.

AR RAHMAN’S CONCERT CRITICISED FOR POOR MANAGEMENT

The concert was earlier slated to take place on August 12. However, it was cancelled due to excessive rain. ACTC Events, organisers of the concert, were slammed for overselling the tickets. Many claimed that women were molested in the stampede and parents lost their children in the crowd.

Others blamed Rahman and the organisers for poor crowd management. Several people couldn’t enter the venue despite having valid tickets. Adityaram’s head, who addressed the crowd towards the end of the concert, asked the event managers to organise the concert properly next time.

AR RAHMAN’S CONCERT ORGANISER APOLOGISES

AR Rahman’s concert was criticised by thousands of people for poor crowd management. There was no proper direction from the event team or the police.

After severe backlash, ACTC Events took to X to extend their apology. Their post on X wrote, “Grateful to Chennai and the legendary @arrahman Sir! The incredible response, the overwhelming crowd made our show a massive success. Those who couldn’t attend because of overcrowding, Our sincere apologies. We take full responsibility and accountable. We are with you. #MarakkumaNenjam (sic).”

AR RAHMAN TO COMPENSATE THOSE WHO DENIED ENTRY

After receiving severe criticism, Rahman took to X to take ownership and decided to pay heed to the grievances of his fans, who were not able to enter the venue.

His post read, “Dearest Chennai Makkale, those of you who purchased tickets and weren’t able to enter owing to unfortunate circumstances, please do share a copy of your ticket purchase to arr4chennai@btos.in along with your grievances. Our team will respond ASAP @BToSproductions @actcevents (sic).”

AR RAHMAN REACTS TO CONCERT FIASCO

Speaking to The Hindu about the concert, Rahman said, “It was a tsunami of people and love that we were unable to handle. As a composer, my job was to give a terrific show, and I thought everything else would be taken care of. I was just thinking that it shouldn’t rain, and was happily performing inside, without any idea of what was happening outside. Our intentions were good, but I think the response was beyond our expectations. We are collecting the data now, and we will surprise fans with something soon.”

He further added, “Right now, we are just terribly disturbed. Safety was the primary issue, especially because there were women and kids. I don’t want to point fingers at anyone, but we have to realise that the city is expanding, and the passion to consume music and art is also expanding.”

AR RAHMAN’S NEW STATEMENT ON THE ISSUE

Post these reports, Rahman elaborated on his previous social media statement about refunding people. In a new social media statement, he wrote, “Some people call me G.O.A.T let me be the sacrificial goat this time for all of us to wake up, let Chennai’s live art flourish with a world-class infrastructure, increase in tourism, efficient crowd management, traffic management, refining audiences to follow rules ..creating a safe and surreal experience for children and women ..Triggering a cultural renaissance at Chennai celebrating our deserving, illuminated local and international talent! (sic).”

TAMBARAM POLICE BEGIN ENQUIRY

After reports of overcrowding and chaotic traffic, Tambaram Police is now enquiring about it. On the road leading up to the venue, people were stuck in traffic for several hours. In fact, as per reports, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s convoy was also caught in the traffic because of the fiasco. The convoy had to use the wrong lane to reach Chennai. Reportedly, the police officials have blamed ACTC Events for their poor crowd control. The inquiry will help in checking if the organisers oversold tickets and if they had followed the guidelines properly in obtaining licenses.
