The start of 2023 brought a major shift in the tech world: the revolution of artificial intelligence (AI). Thanks to generative AI assistants like ChatGPT, Bard, Dall-E and others, AI has managed to become a part of our personal and professional lives. However, this shift has raised the question of whether AI will take over the job replacing humans.

While many experts believe that AI will eliminate many jobs, others believe that new opportunities will emerge as technology continues to evolve. A recent CNBC report supports this latter notion, finding that freelance job and career platforms are experiencing a boom in AI job postings and searches.

Citing data from Indeed, a job listing website, the report indicates that job postings related to generative AI have witnessed an increase of nearly 250 percent from July 2021 to July 2023. Another report from LinkedIn, a job portal owned by Microsoft, suggests that interest in generative AI is rapidly growing on the platform.

According to the report, the number of U.S. LinkedIn members posting content mentioning generative AI keywords has been increasing by 25 per cent month-over-month since early April. In June, AI-related keywords such as “ChatGPT,” “prompt engineering,” and “prompt crafting” were being added to profiles 15 times more frequently than at the beginning of the year.

“In the past year, we’ve seen professionals globally adopting AI skills at a rapid rate; this is happening in parallel with employers increasingly looking for talent with knowledge of how to effectively use new AI technologies to enhance productivity in their organisations,” wrote Dr. Karin Kimbrough, chief economist at LinkedIn, in a recent report on the platform.

Meanwhile, the reports that stated that AI will replace certain repetitive tasks rather than skill-based roles are supported by the increasing demand for AI-related jobs. This trend is similar to what happened when computers were first introduced. Typewriters were phased out, but the machines also created new opportunities for people who were willing to learn new skills related to computers.

In the same way, the upcoming employment landscape is likely to shift, with some jobs being automated and new jobs being created. However, the jobs that are created will require skills that are different from the ones that are lost. For example, AI will create new opportunities for people who know how to develop and deploy AI applications, or who can use AI to solve business problems.

“Many companies are exploring ways to integrate AI into their business platforms and working with skilled freelance developers,” said a Fiverr spokeswoman to CNBC.

Significantly, AI-related employment opportunities range from machine learning positions to freelance roles will continue to grow. Individuals with AI knowledge, such as proficiency in using AI models like ChatGPT API, DALL-E, and others, will be in high demand.
