Cement Majors Ramp Up Mfg Capacities | Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: Two of the country’s largest cement players are ramping up production capacities. UltraTech, India’s number one cement player, is commissioning two new greenfield capacities totalling 5.4 million tonnes in Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, which will take its total capacity to 151.6 million tonnes. This capacity, said UltraTech, is more than 150% of the capacity in the US and 80% of Europe’s capacity.
Shree Cement, the third-largest player, has inaugurated a three-million-tonne new plant in Andhra Pradesh, which will propel its capacity to 56.4 million tonnes. Built with an investment of Rs 2,500 crore, the Andhra Pradesh plant will be Shree Cement’s sixth facility in the country and second in the southern region after Karnataka.

Aditya Birla Group, which owns UltraTech, said it took 36 years for it to get to a capacity of 100 million tonnes but it added the next 50 million tonnes in less than five years. “Reaching this milestone is symbolic of India’s ascent on the global stage and demonstrates the dynamism and scale of Indian corporations,” said Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla. UltraTech will invest Rs 32,400 crore towards ongoing capex over the next three years. In FY24, it had expanded capacity by 18.7 million tonnes.
Shree Cement said it commissioned the Andhra Pradesh plant six months ahead of schedule. “We’re committed to growing responsibly,” said Shree Cement MD Neeraj Akhoury. Around 75% of the plant’s power requirement is met through renewable energy sources. The company had increased capacity by 9.5 million tonnes in FY24, through three new greenfield plants at an investment of over Rs 7,000 crore.
