MUMBAI: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has opened up new opportunities for India’s young innovators and the world believes that India will have an “upper hand” in this area, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday.
“Today, we are in a new era connected by AI technology. Our job is to not let this opportunity pass…National Quantum mission, AI mission and semiconductor mission will open doors to new possibilities for India’s youth,” Modi said at Startup Mahakumbh. India will take the lead in AI, Modi said, adding that the country will serve as a launchpad for new global innovations and solutions. “….AI ki samarth, iska netritwa Bharat ke haath mein hi rahega aur rehna bhi chahiye,” he said.
The PM said during election campaign he himself was making use of AI to overcome the language barrier. “Using AI, I am communicating in Tamil, Telugu and Odiya,” he said.

Starting his address, Modi took a dig at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, although he did not name him. “A lot of people launch startups, more so in politics. They have to be repeatedly launched. The difference between you and then is that you experiment and if it does not work, you quickly move to next one.”

He also suggested that organisers of the startup event knew what is to follow in next five years as businesses and industry usually refrain from hosting such programmes after poll dates have been announced.

Modi said India’s rise as a ray of hope in the global startup space was part of a well thought out strategy. India has taken “right decisions” at right time to build the startup ecosystem, which today is the third largest in world after the US and China.

He asked startups to support new ideas and enable further growth of the ecosystem and said govt is also working towards creating a better funding mechanism, Modi said.

“Startups will play a significant role in India’s journey towards becoming the third largest economy.”
