MUMBAI: Low-cost carrier SpiceJet plans to lay off 1,400 employees – about 15% of its workforce – by March end as part of its turnaround plan. The airline confirmed the decision stating that the move will help it save up to Rs 100 crore annually. Currently, the cash-strapped airline has around 9,000 employees.
“It currently operates about 32 aircraft and another ten aircraft on wet-lease, that have come with pilots and cabin crew,” said an airline official. They added that before Covid, as on March 2019, the airline operated a fleet of 120 aircraft. The retrenchment will be limited to non-operational staff and so, will not include pilots and cabin crew members.
