The planned South East Asia tour which Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was reportedly to begin from Friday has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, sources from the party told India Today. During the now-cancelled trip, Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to travel to Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The cancellation comes after the Congress’s recent defeat in three state Assembly elections — Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mahdya Pradesh — to the BJP. The Congress party failed to retain power in two states and the BJP won with a landslide victory in all three states.

After the Congress’s defeat in the polls, there were reports that party insiders and alliance partners within the INDIA bloc questioned the timing of Rahul Gandhi’s South East Asia tour.

The opinion within the party was that Rahul should be seen assisting Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge as the Winter Session of Parliament also began on December 4 — the day after the election results were announced.

Rahul Gandhi was in Hyderabad on Thursday for the swearing-in ceremony of Congress leader Revanth Reddy as the Telangana Chief Minister.
