The RBI had announced the discontinuation of Rs 2,000 banknotes, as per a May 19, 2023, press release.Initially, the option to deposit or exchange these notes at bank branches was available until September 30, 2023, which was later extended until October 7, 2023.
Starting October 9, 2023, RBI Issue Offices are accepting Rs 2000 banknotes for deposit into individual or entity bank accounts, in addition to counter exchanges.
RBI Regional Director Rohit P Das has encouraged customers to utilize insured postal services for a seamless and secure direct credit to their accounts, thereby avoiding the inconvenience of visiting specific branches and waiting in queues.
How to send Rs 2000 banknotes to RBI Issue office from Post Office
Sending Rs 2000 banknotes to RBI Issue offices via India Post requires some essential steps. According to an ET report, to begin with you will have to submit the necessary documents along with a completed application form to India Post.
The required documents include Aadhaar Card, Driving License/Voters ID Card/Passport/NREGA Card/PAN Card/Identity card issued by a Government Department or Public Sector Unit.
Include the following bank account details:
- Account Holder’s Name
- Account Number
- Account Type
- Bank Name
- Branch Name and Address
- IFSC Code
It’s important to note that the RBI will not assume responsibility for incorrect account details or accounts that are not fully KYC compliant.
Enclose a copy of valid documents and a copy of the bank account statement (including account details) or the first page (with account details) of the Passbook.
The 19 RBI offices facilitating the deposit and exchange of the Rs 2,000 banknotes are located in Ahmedabad,Bhubaneswar, Belapu, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jammu, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram.
