A 27-year-old girl from the Baduga community in Tamil Nadu has scripted history by becoming the first pilot from her community after graduating from a flying school in South Africa.

Jayashree from Kothagiri had completed her formal education and, while working as an IT professional, she decided to enroll in a flying school.

Though sceptical in the beginning, her father, Mani, who is also a village administrative officer, agreed to support his daughter.

Jayashree flew to South Africa, cleared the exams with the required flight hours to become a pilot and returned home.

The Badugas are a closely-knit tribal community living around the Ooty and Coonoor region with their own cultural and linguistic identity.

In recent years, Badugas have slowly come out of the region to explore new work options by joining the armed forces and the Merchant Navy.
