Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs from Manipur will meet the central leadership in Delhi, pressing to expedite a resolution to the ongoing violence in the state.

The ethnic clashes reignited in the state over the past few days, resulting in casualties among both civilians and armed forces personnel. On Wednesday, the state saw a fresh incident of violence as unidentified gunmen, suspected to be cadres of banned terror groups, attacked people and hurled bombs at a village in Imphal West district, bordering Kangpokpi where three persons were killed a day before.

In the wake of new incidents, sources indicate that the MLAs will push for a proper solution to resolve the crisis without any delay. Nearly 30 Manipur MLAs are expected to arrive in Delhi.

Earlier this week, 23 MLAs of the BJP-led government signed a resolution, pledging to protect the territorial integrity of the strife-torn state.

“It is unanimously resolved by all the undersigned members of the Legislative Assembly that we would stand for the territorial integrity of the state of Manipur and no form of separate administration will be agreed to by us,” the resolution read.

The MLAs had stated that they would soon proceed to Delhi to persuade the central leadership to bring a solution to the present crisis at the earliest. However, Chief Minister N Biren Singh was not among the signatories.

At least 160 people have lost their lives, and several hundred have been injured in the ethnic clashes that broke out between the Meitei people, a majority living in the Imphal Valley, and the Kuki tribal community from the surrounding hills. The violence erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
