Apple launched the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models last night with a lot of fanfare. Unlike last year’s iPhone 14 and 14 Pro series, which received incremental upgrades, the latest iPhones feature a bunch of considerable upgrades without significantly raising the price. The most significant update includes the addition of a USB-C port for charging on all iPhone 15 and 15 Pro models, which most Android phones now carry. Apart from that, the entire iPhone 15 lineup now features an updated notch and a 48-megapixel camera. There are some tweaks to the chassis, making the iPhone 15 series a good lineup, but it could have been better.
That’s because both the vanilla and pros still lack some of the basic features that we expect from a smartphone priced above Rs 70K. Don’t get me wrong — Apple has definitely set the bar with certain features and security practices. However, Android counterparts have also done a great job over the years and certainly raised the bar and it would have been nice to see some of the useful features that are now common in the Android world on the new iPhones.
Refresh rate on iPhone 15
In essence, the relatively more affordable iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are similar to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models, featuring the Dynamic Island notch and A16 Bionic SoC. However, despite modifications to the display, the regular iPhone 15 still offers a 60Hz refresh rate, while the 120Hz refresh rate has become standard on Android smartphones in almost all price brackets.
The high refresh rate, which Apple calls ProMotion tech, is limited to select iPhone Pro and iPad Pro models. The benefit of this feature is a smooth scrolling experience, and it can also improve gaming performance. We would have liked to see the iPhone 15 get it.
Fast charging
Apple has been fairly behind its competition in terms of offering fast charging. We suspect the reason behind that is to ensure that battery health remains good for at least two to three years on the iPhone. As a side note, you must know that extremely fast battery charging can impact the longevity of the battery.
But having said that, Android makers are showing that there are ways to offer both: extremely fast charging and battery health that lasts at least 3 to 4 years. Apple is still going slow on this part.
Despite the addition of USB-C ports on the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro models, charging speeds may not be their strongest point. Apple notes that a 20W charger can take the iPhone 15 from zero to 50 per cent in 30 minutes, while reaching 100 per cent may take close to an hour or more. On the contrary, many Android phones now offer at least 65W charging, capable of charging the phone from 0 to 100 in 40 minutes. Some Chinese counterparts have even managed to manufacture phones that charge in less than 15 minutes with proprietary chargers.
Faster transfer speeds
Speaking of USB-C ports on the iPhone 15 models, there’s a big catch. The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models feature the USB 3 standard, enabling file transfers at speeds of up to 10Gbps. In contrast, the regular iPhone 15 and 15 Plus offer the USB 2 standard, which limits file transfers to speeds of up to 480 Mbps. Many Android phones come with more advanced standards. Faster transfer speeds can be highly useful if you create a lot of content on your phone and need to transfer files to a PC for editing.
The weird thing is that Apple is already implementing faster transfer speeds in the iPhone 15 Pro. It would have been great to see the company offer the same to the users of the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus, which are otherwise top-end phones in the market.
How much zoom?
A phone with a good camera zoom can be highly useful at live events and concerts. The new iPhone 15 Pro features a new Telephoto lens that uses a tetra-prism design to enable 5x optical zoom. The 5x optical zoom allows for 25x digital zoom. The regular iPhone 15 models now offer 10X digital zoom but no optical zoom.
In contrast, several Android counterparts, including Samsung, can offer up to 100x digital zoom. Google also enhanced the zooming capabilities on the Pixel 7 Pro last year. But let’s forget about the digital zoom. What we would have liked to see is more optical zoom. Up to 10X optical zoom has been delighting Android users for a while now. Similarly, we would have liked to see a zoom lens on the iPhone 15 as well.
Storage upgrades
Many Android competitors are slowly getting rid of the 128GB model for their latest smartphones but are raising the price. This year’s iPhone 15 models have not seen a significant price rise, though the base model still offers 128GB storage. On the other hand, the price of the 256GB storage option increases significantly.
For instance, the base iPhone 15 Pro costs Rs 1,34,900 for the 128GB storage version, while the 256GB storage option costs Rs 1,44,900 (a difference of Rs 10,000). A similar price difference exists between the 128GB and 256GB variants of the iPhone 15.
