Amid the ongoing Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, farmers in Tamil Ndau’s Delta region are distressed due to scarcely available water for cultivation and have been forced to destroy their paddy crops.
These farmers had initially planted ‘Kuruvai’ paddy crops for a short-term yield, as they had lost hope for ‘Sambha’ cultivation, which is a long-term option. But eventually, facing severe water shortage, the farmers used their tractors to destroy the crops.
In Tamil Nadu’s Thiruthuraipundi, located in the Delta region, farmers destroyed their weeks-old crops covering nearly 300 acres of land. They had to take this decision because they had borrowed loans and pledged their jewels for cultivation and exhausted the money they had. And without sufficient water, continuing was impossible.
The ongoing dispute between the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments remains unresolved. The Tamil Nadu government is requesting a minimum of 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery water for 10 days to protect the paddy crops in the delta region. In contrast, the Cauvery Water Management Authority has suggested providing 5,000 cusecs of water for 15 days.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has cited deficits in monsoon rainfall and water scarcity as reasons for their inability to release more water.
