Samsung is rumoured to be working on a smart ring that could be released in 2024. The Soul based gadget maker is likely to introduce the Samsung Galaxy smart ring which is said to be more accurate than other health-tracking devices, such as smartwatches, and could eventually replace them.

Samsung has also reportedly trademarked a series of names for a rumoured new smart ring, including Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse, and Galaxy Rhythm. However, the company has not yet officially confirmed the device’s arrival. According to a Dutch publication GalaxyClub, Samsung had previously trademarked the names Galaxy Index, Galaxy Insight, and Galaxy Circle for the same device.

Amidst all the speculation and reports about Samsung launching its first smart ring, a new tip suggests that the company could announce it at the 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event, where the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones is expected to be unveiled. Tipster Ice Universe (translated from Chinese) on Weibo suggests that the ring is expected to be a star product at the event, which could be held in January next year. It is also speculated that the ring could replace Galaxy Watch models as the primary health-tracking device.

Earlier, a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) suggested that the rumoured Galaxy Ring will collect, assess, track, and transmit health, fitness, and sleep-related data. It will also monitor “biometric and physiological data, vital signs, and personal health records” to provide medical advice when necessary. The multiple sensors placed inside the ring are expected to improve the accuracy of health data.

An earlier leak showed some possible designs of the Samsung Galaxy Ring and revealed that it could potentially come with a metallic finish. However, nothing has been officially shared by Samsung yet.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s rival Apple is also speculated to be working around launching a smart ring. According to reports Apple has recently filed a patent titled “Ring Input Device With Pressure-Sensitive Input,” suggesting innovative features for a smart ring.

Unlike previous Apple smart ring patents, this patent filed at United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) details the internal workings of the ring-shaped device which is designed not only to deliver notification taps but also to have controls on its exterior.

The patent application further highlights the practicality of enhancing rings with additional capabilities, noting that electronic finger rings can serve as discreet and everyday communication devices that can wirelessly connect with other compatible devices due to their small size and regular wear.

Meanwhile, Indian brands like BoAt and Noise are also exploring the new smart wearable segment of smart rings. Recently, Boat launched its first smart ring with several health-tracking options. It is offered in a single metallic silver color and is priced in India at Rs 8,999. In the international market, brands like Oura are dominating the smart ring space.
