After hearing short arguments on whether the petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the British-era sedition law under Section 124A of the IPC should be referred to a Constitution Bench, the Supreme Court on Tuesday decided to place the matter before a five-judge bench of the court.

The top court order on this long-standing debate over misuse of the sedition law comes even as the Central government has introduced three new criminal law bills in Parliament that have “revised” the law on sedition. The bills have been referred to the Parliamentary standing committee for discussion. Here’s a graphic presentation of the arguments before the three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud that heard the petitions on Tuesday.
