Morocco was struck by a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake, the strongest in over a century on September 8. The epicenter was located in the Atlas Mountains region, specifically in Al-Haouz.

The quake, which was relatively shallow, resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life. Over 2,000 people were reported dead, and more than 30,000 individuals in Marrakech and surrounding areas were affected.

Cities such as Marrakesh, Taroudant, Asmiz, and Chichaoua suffered heavy damage, with the historic city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, experiencing significant destruction. Rescue teams continue to search for survivors amidst the ruins.

International aid has been accepted from Britain, Spain, Qatar, and the UAE, with France pledging 5 million euros. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has also provided financial support to the Moroccan Red Crescent Society.
