After much deliberation and wrangling, G20 delegates have finally “reached a compromise” on the wording to describe Russia’s war on Ukraine, reported news agency Reuters citing sources familiar with the matter.
The development comes as leaders from the world’s wealthiest nations gathered in New Delhi for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
The 20-nation bloc is deeply divided over the war in Ukraine, with Western nations pushing for strong condemnation of Russia while Moscow, backed by its ally China, wants to water down international censure of its “special military operation” , throwing up a major roadblock to joint action.
On Friday, India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said the joint declaration was “almost ready” and would be presented to G20 leaders over the course of the two-day summit.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
