South Korea’s Dnauri captures lander Vikram on Moon’s Shiva Shakti point

Days after it went into a sleep mode on the surface of the Moon, the Vikram lander has been captured by South Korea’s lunar orbiter, Danuri.

The images show landing site of India’s lunar lander, Chandrayaan-3 known as the Shiv Shakti point. The images were captured from a lunar orbit approximately 100 km above the moon’s surface.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute announced that the photos were taken on August 27, to commemorate the world’s first successful landing at the lunar south pole by India’s Chandrayaan-3.

The landing site, named ‘Shiv Shakti Point’, is located about 600 kilometers from the Moon’s South Pole.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission, which marked India’s third successful Moon mission, made a historic landing on the lunar surface on August 23.

Since its touchdown, the rover has conducted extensive research and data collection, primarily focusing on analysing the composition of the moon’s soil and atmosphere.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission took off on July 14, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. It entered the lunar orbit on August 5, and the lander module separated from the propulsion module on August 17.

The first images from the mission, revealing a pockmarked surface near the lunar south pole, were taken after the probe’s historic moon touchdown on August 23.

The Korean lunar probe Danuri is scheduled to orbit the moon until December 2025, performing various scientific and technological missions, such as photographing candidate lunar landing sites and measuring the lunar magnetic field to study the origin of the moon.

The photos taken by Danuri of the Chandrayaan-3 landing site mark a significant milestone in international cooperation in space exploration and research.
