Probe agency ED seizes gold worth over Rs 5 crore from 2 Rajasthan officials

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday seized 8 kg of gold, valued at about Rs 4.84 crore, from the lockers of OP Vishwakarma, a Rajasthan government official involved in the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Additionally, 1.5 kg of gold, estimated to be worth Rs. 1.05 crore, was seized from the locker of Amitabh Kaushik, another official connected to the mission.

The ED’s actions follow allegations of corruption made by BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Rajasthan.

The mission, which aims to provide functional household tap connections to every household at a service level of 55 litres per capita per day, is jointly funded by the Rajasthan government and the Centre.

On September 12, the ED initiated search operations at various bank lockers in Jaipur under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

The investigation was based on an FIR registered by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Rajasthan against individual contractors including Padamchand Jain, who were suspected of bribing public servants.

They were suspected of having bribed public servants to secure illegal protection, obtain tenders, approve bills, and cover up irregularities related to contracts with the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED).
