India vs Pakistan Asia Cup Reserve Day completely justified | Sledging Room, Ep 68

by The Technical Blogs

There was a bit of criticism for the Asian Cricket Council’s decision to deploy a Reserve Day for India’s Super 4 match of the 2023 Asia Cup against Pakistan. But that furor was uncalled for. Thank goodness there was an extra day.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) faced significant backlash over its decision to schedule a reserve day for the Super Fours match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023. Critics argued that the move was inconsistent and unfair to other teams participating in the tournament. The controversy arose when the ACC announced a reserve day for the India-Pakistan match, but not for any of the other Super Four matches.

Asia Cup 2023: Full Coverage

Despite the controversy, the match between India and Pakistan did indeed go into the reserve day due to inclement weather. The match, originally scheduled for September 10th, 2023, at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, was disrupted by rain and had to be continued on the reserve day.

The match turned out to be a spectacular display of cricketing prowess from the Indian team, who crushed their archrivals Pakistan by a staggering 228 runs. India set a formidable target of 357 runs, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul both scoring unbeaten centuries. This was India’s highest total against Pakistan in ODI cricket, demonstrating their dominance in the game.

Pakistan, in response, was all out after scoring only 128 runs, leading to a massive victory for India. The bowling performance from the Indian side was equally impressive, with Kuldeep Yadav picking up five wickets and causing a batting collapse in the Pakistani lineup.

Meanwhile, India also qualified for the final of Asia Cup 2023 after winning a low-scoring affair in Colombo against Sri Lanka. Dunith Wellalage picked up a 5-wicket haul as the 20-year-old left-arm spinner troubled the India batters along with part-timer Chairth Asalanka.

However, India huffed and puffed to post 213 on the board, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s fifty and useful contributions from KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan.

India defended the total successfully despite scare from Sri Lanka batters, especially Wellalage who had a terrific run.

India have ticked quite a few boxes, especially after the fine returns of Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul from injuries.

Are they now a favourite to win the ODI World Cup? In the latest episode of the Sledging Room podcast, Akshay Ramesh and Saurabh Kumar join Rajarshi Gupta to discuss the Asia Cup showing of Team India so far.
