Colonel Manpreet Singh was one of the three people who were killed in action during a gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday. He was an Army Rashtriya Rifles unit Commanding Officer (Colonel).

Speaking to India Today, Virender Gill, his brother, said that the Army officer’s wife is still unaware of his death. The officer lived with his family in Chandigarh.

“I spoke to him this morning at 6:45 am and he said he is busy and would call me later in the evening when the Army operation is over. We received information about him getting injured in the afternoon,” Virender said.

Colonel Manpreet Singh is survived by his wife Jagmeet Kaur, a six-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter, who are presently living at his in-laws’ house.

Jagmeet, a school teacher, has been told that his husband is injured. She is presently living with her parents.

Colonel Manpreet Singh’s mortal remains are being brought to Chandigarh and his cremation will take place on Thursday, September 14.

Apart from Colonel Singh, Major Aashish Dhonchak and Deputy Superintendent of Police Himanyun Muzamil were also killed in the encounter. The Army officers were leading the troops from the front after they had gone to search for terrorists in the area based on specific intelligence.

J&K DGP Dilbag Singh, ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar along with Army personnel rushed to the encounter site to supervise the operation. The encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists hiding in the Kokernag area of Anantnag.
