The small coastal town of São Lourenço do Bairro in Portugal experienced an unusual event that painted its streets red. On September 10, two tanks owned by Levira Distillery, a local winemaker, suddenly burst, releasing a staggering 600,000 gallons of red wine onto the streets.

The incident was captured on camera and quickly went viral, turning the town into an internet sensation.

The distillery, located about 140 miles north of Lisbon, apologised for the incident and pledged to handle the cleanup, repair, and damage.

The spillage was attributed to a wine surplus in Europe due to decreasing demand, which has led to an oversupply crisis. Despite the unexpected occurrence, no injuries were reported.

However, there were concerns about potential environmental impacts, as the wine may have entered a home’s basement and was diverted into nearby fields.
