Novak Djokovic, on Friday, September 8, advanced to the US Open 2023 final after beating Ben Shelton in straight sets. It took the Serbian legend two hours and 41 minutes to win the match 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (6-4) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. With the win, Djokovic made his way through to his 36th Grand Slam final, the most by any player in the Open Era.

Djokovic also played his 100th match in the US Open and made sure to make it a memorable outing. It also happened to be his 87th victory in men’s singles at Flushing Meadows. The veteran is now set to face the winner of the match between Daniil Medvedev and the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

If he meets Alcaraz, then it would be a rematch of the Wimbledon 2023 final where the Spaniard defeated Djokovic in a thrilling five-setter. In majors, Djokovic is now 257-1 in matches where he has won the first two sets.

DJOKOVIC IN COMMAND

As far as his match against Shelton was concerned, Djokovic looked in command right from the outset. Although Shelton tried to take the attacking route, it was not enough to stop Djokovic. In the opening set, Djokovic took an early break to make it 4-2, after which he closed out the set in 34 minutes. During this while, Shelton saved a break point, but he fell short eventually.

Djokovic started the second set in a commanding manner as well. He earned an early break to put the young Shelton under extreme pressure. At 4-2, Djokovic racked up another break point after which he served out the second set without having to break a sweat.

SHELTON MAKES DJOKOVIC WORK HARD

In the third set, Shelton had a chance to go 1-0 up at 40-15. But, yet again, the brilliance of Djokovic stopped him. Djokovic won four points in a row and broke his opponent’s serve. At 3-4, Shelton earned his first break of the match to make it 4-4 and stay alive in the semi-final.

At 4-5, 30-40, Djokovic faced a set point, but he saved it to make it 5-5. Thereafter, he earned an all-important service break to show nerves of steel under pressure. Serving for the match, Djokovic saved two break points and gained himself a match point.

But Shelton somehow saved it and broke his opponent’s serve to take the set into a tie-break. Djokovic was leading 5-1 in the tie-break before Shelton won three points in a row to make it 5-4. At 6-4, Djokovic earned himself his second match point and this time around, he did not falter.
